Thorpe Park History WW1 Air Field

Looking back at World War 1, the Airfield has displayed some of the greatest fighting planes from the 1914 era.

Thought of at the time as planes to view battles the airfield shows planes that carried the first automatic weapons on, installed in order to commence battle.

Planes from the era included one flown by the greatest fighters, from the Camel, SPAD, and SE5, and the planes from the era include the Sopwith Baby, Bristol M1CDe Havilland DH2 (first single seater fighter) Sopwith Triplane and the Sopwith Camel, all of these were on display at Thorpe Park.
