5th Dimension
If there is one thing that Chessington had always done well, dark rides would be at the top of the list with arguable 3 excellent additions added over the duration of the Theme Park. The 5th Dimension was the first, and right at the top of the list!
Opened in 1987 the 5th Dimension took you on a journey to defeat the evil Gorg who has taken over TV land, you were shrunk down to “TV size” as you team with Zappomatic to do so. The ride was and perhaps to this day remains one of the most unique rides ever created for any park with one of the main problems that it was possibly ahead of its time.
With a cartoon storyline, and heavy Hitachi sponsorship the ride was very different, and although it’s no where near as interactive as modern day Tomb Blaster, pushing the flashing button on your car always made you feel like you had defeated Gorg (possibly because he always died…) The ride even had it’s own soundtrack, released on cassette!
It’s out there… Somewhere…
