The history of Chessington 2002
2002 was a massive year for Chessington with the re-opening of the Vampire the largest talking point. Now with floorless trains the ride took on a whole new experience. Unfortunately not all in a good way, the ride was stripped down to bare bones with the station being worst effected, with the themed air gates removed, cob webs and the organist wouldn’t work until 2004.
Also the tunnel was completely stripped back making it more of a dip in the floor than a tunnel, in addition the main entrance would be used for the last time.
2002 saw the re-theme of the Forbidden Tomb into Tomb Blaster, the all new interactive shooting game. This turned out to be the ride of the year and to date, is still excellent fun with a massive re-ride appeal.
Totally new for 2002 was Dennis’ Madhouse, the attraction which had sat in the dome was now brought in and themed into Beanoland, the form ball factory was very popular with the family!
On the zoo side the map in 2002 showed for the first time in a while the detail in which you could experience the animal attractions. With money spent on new enclosures the experience was not only enhanced but also highlighted more on the map to move people towards the enhanced area.
Black Buccaneer was also brown for the last year, with it to be painted black for 2003.
